Mission trip to Oaxaca Mexico: Foundation For His Ministry (March 2005)

We first heard about (FFHM) Foundation For His Ministry in the early 80's while members of Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church in Milwaukee.

In the early 90's we ventured down to the Baja, Mexico mission for our first trip with 2 of our 3 children and several families from our church. Flying to San Diego, staying overnight in a motel, renting a van and starting out early in the morning for the 6 hour trip to the mission before it got dark!

At a later trip we met Frank Tichnor at the mission and while there he left for Oaxaca to scout out the area for a new mission base.

After reading about FFHM and the ministry in Oaxaca, we felt led to go there. One Sunday at church (Eastbrook) we asked Ron and Dolores Blust and Carol Beimborn if they wanted to go with us. The rest is history!

Now we can fly to Oaxaca City

SHORT TERM MISSION TO OAXACA, MEXICO

  March 2005

On March 9th, 2005, five Eastbrookers – Richard and Naomi Dassow, Carol Beimborn, and Ron and Dolores Blust – left for a nine-day mission to Oaxaca, Mexico.  We had an opportunity to serve at a new home for children, Hogar Para Los Ninos, founded by the Foundation for His Ministry which has been established in the Baja Peninsula of Mexico for approximately thirty years.

The Dassows and other members of Eastbrook Church have served this ministry in the Baja.  Dr. Patrick Murphy and his wife Anna (Gini and Fred Schneider’s daughter) spent more than a year there early in their marriage, providing for the medical needs of the Mission.

Because the Oaxacan graduates of the Bible School at the Baja Mission wanted to return to Oaxaca to minister to their own people, a branch was started in Oaxaca about 8 years ago, with a mission serving 40 children.  Now a new location has been secured and construction has begun on a facility that will accommodate 100 children.  Ian Croft, Construction Manager for the facility, along with his wife, Elaine, hosted us while we were there.  Ian schedules and works with the teams of volunteer workers in their assignments.   The plan is to move the children into the new facility by mid-July.  They also have future plans to build a church, conference center, school and medical clinic on the grounds.

Our team worked together with a team of five from Montana and two couples who are SOWERS, Servants on Wheels Ever Ready.  They traveled to Mexico in their RV’s and are planning to stay for 3-4 months as needed.  Others serving there are giving a year or more of their time to benefit the Mission, in answer to God’s call on their lives.  In addition, there are talented Mexicans working in the kitchen providing meals, as well as skilled Mexicans laying tile in beautifully artistic designs throughout the facility.  So it was truly a time for many different people to come together.  We were able to practice our Spanish as the native Mexicans practiced their English on us.  We visited other churches while we were there and celebrated community with our fellow Indian (primarily Zapotec) believers.  They joyfully shared their love of Jesus with us.

We took part in a wide range of assignments including painting, carpentry jobs, sewing, cleaning, kitchen kp, and caring for the grounds.  It was our delight to do whatever was asked of us, knowing that we were serving Jesus.  In the process, we established relationships with selfless Christians who were being used of God.  People from all over the U.S. and Canada form work groups to go down to Mexico at their own expense in order to help.  One of the things our men helped with was placing forms for concrete work in preparation for a team of 13 coming from Chicago the week after we left.  Their particular skill was pouring concrete so we prepared the way for them to exercise their gift.

Mexico is a marvelous country, the weather was beautiful – 80 to 85 degrees in the daytime, 55 degrees at night.  The Mission is in a lovely valley nestled in the mountains of southern Mexico.  An out-of-season shower brought us a beautiful rainbow – another reminder of God’s promise.

The bougainvillea and geraniums were blooming and even though we returned to blizzards in Wisconsin, we had a wonderful taste of Spring and of eternity – faithful people saying “Here I am” to Jesus Christ.

Dolores Blust
Thanks Dolores for this great summary of our trip!

Oaxaca (wa-ha-ka), in southeast Mexico, is a rugged, mountainous land of diversity. One of the great treasures of this beautiful state is its people,
many of whom have never heard the name of Jesus. To these we have been called, “…so that they may turn from darkness to light from the dominion of Satan to God…so they may receive forgiveness of sin and an inheritance among those sanctified by faith in Jesus Christ. ” Acts 26:18

Latest News from Foundation For His Ministry

Foundation for His Ministry Weekly Praise & Prayer Newsletter

Foundation for His Ministry is a mission whose purpose is to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ. To this end we share and demonstrate God’s love through the power of the Holy Spirit by meeting basic spiritual, physical and educational needs of those in Mexico and beyond. This will be done in such a way as to establish the Mission as a model of effective ministry for other parts of the world.

We so appreciate your prayers and concern for Foundation For His Ministry. We know that without you, none of this would be possible.

Praise Reports:
.  Dirk Kos, Assistant Administrator of the Baja Mission, reports:

The wheelchairs have arrived!!!! All 50 of them!! It is indeed a huge blessing they were allowed to cross  the whole load. Apparently nothing could be crossed in the last 3-4 weeks, but the Lord blessed it all and it came into Mexico without any trouble. Above all we thank our Father in Heaven for His hand and bringing this all together, we thank Joni and Friends for the open door for us to be able to obtain these wheelchairs, and we thank Steve and Sean for getting them to the mission. Many people will be hugely blessed.

Sergio and Dirk with the donated wheelchairs
.  Every month hundreds of children are given Children's Hunger Fund boxes, food from Gleanings in Saltana, CA, and milk and peanut butter from friends like you. We thank God for his constant provision.

Prayer Requests:
. Our beloved Nora O'Leary, a former staff member at the Baja Mission, graduated to heaven this week. Board member Carrie Irving wrote:

That makes me incredibly sad.  Norita was a good friend.  I loved her dearly.  I loved being a part of what God did in her life over the years. Each small step of faith she took just blessed me so much.  When she moved off the mission base into her own trailer with her purple hair and joyous spirit, I wanted to applaud.  She had come so far and become a whole person.  So beautiful to watch God's amazing work in a life.  I will really miss her and her incredible faith.  She loved her Lord and King soooooo much.  She must be incredibly happy right now.

A year ago we had a part of Nora's testimony in the newsletter:

Nora has faithfully served at the Baja Mission for 16 years. Nora's journey to the Mission was a trail of brokenness and tears.

"At 20 years old,I was addicted to heroin and a battered wife with nowhere to look but up. God sent a friend to tell me that God had a wonderful life planned for me if I would just trust Him and invite Him in. I did. But it was not an easy journey. At 46, my life hit the skids again. My pastor sent me to the Baja Mission for healing and refocus. I began serving in the kitchen. After 10 years, I took a position as receptionist in the Medical Center. He brought healing to me as I encouraged and prayed for others. I am so grateful to God and to Him be the glory!"

Nora
. We continue to be painfully short on finances. As the Missions in Mexico are sending their fund requests for money for the month of October we are feeling even more of a burden as we realize we do not have enough money in our accounts to cover all the needs. Please join us in praying for two things:

1) That God would miraculously provide for everything we need and that we would have the faith to trust and wait on His provision.
2) That God would give us wisdom to know what means and avenues to pursue in fundraising.
. Please pray for the administrator at the Michoacan Mission, Jorge Galeana Rubio. This past Saturday he injured his ankle. He will be off his feet for the next two weeks. We pray that the bone will quickly heal.

Jorge
. Please keep in your prayers Modesto, our of our missionaries serving in the mountains of Oaxaca. Despite his very limited vision, he continually travels to small communities in the area of Amoltepec to preach and disciple.

Modesto
. We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to make videos about our ministries in Oaxaca, Sinaloa and Tijuana. If you are interested, please contact Janelle at janelle@ffhm.org.

Praise Reports:
.  Mario Cordoba, the administrator of the Baja Mission, and his wife Graciela received visas for Canada and it was truly a miracle. The process only took 2 weeks and they were granted 9 year visas. They will be going to speak on behalf of FFHM and will be great representatives of this organization.

Mario, Graciela and their daughter Sandra
.  Nathan, the son of Oaxaca Administrator Jill Adams, was born with Hepatitis C. Recent bloodwork showed his liver levels are the lowest they have been in the last year. Thank you for praying and please continue praying that God heals his little body.

.  Pastor Margarito has been sharing  in devotions with the staff every Thursday in the month of September at the Michoacan Mission. We are grateful for people like him that share their gifts and talents with our Missions.

Pastor Margarito
Prayer Requests:
. The recent hurricane hit 800 miles south of the Baja Mission and we have heard of extensive damage in Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. The only effects of the storm in Vicente Guerrero were days of extremely high temperatures and humidity. Those who had been living there for years could not remember that much heat. Unfortunately, they didn't experience any of the desperately needed rain. Please continue joining us in prayer for rain in the Baja Peninsula.

Baja Peninsula
. Please pray for Enoc, one of the university students living at the TJ House. He was involved in a mugging last month and the wounds haven't healed well. He will have further appointments with a plastic surgeon to determine next steps.
